From the 8th to 13th century, Silves was the capital of the Moorish Algarve (Al-Gharb), and the largest city in southern Portugal. The towering red sandstone Castelo de Silves is the most visited monument in the region — a true icon that you can see for miles across the orange groves.

The medieval old town is built on a hilltop overlooking the Arade River, lined with cafés, craft shops, and one of the oldest cork factories in Portugal. It is a perfect half-day trip from Albufeira, Lagos, or Portimão — and halfway between them all, ideal for combining the cultural with the coastal.

Don't miss the Arade River kayak tours (2 hours, family-friendly) and the famous Silves Medieval Festival in August — the largest historical reenactment in Portugal.

When to visit: Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are Silves's sweet spots — 18–24 °C, orange trees in blossom, river kayak tours running, and the castle crowds a fraction of August's. June and early September are the Medieval Festival window — book transfers well in advance. Mid-summer is hot (35 °C+) and the castle climb is a workout; January is the quietest month, ideal for photographers but expect shorter river-tour schedules.
