Winter sees 15+°C daytime highs and almost-empty boardwalks (one of the mildest places in Portugal out of season). November–March is sleeping season; many beachfront restaurants close.

Walk the boardwalk east of the Casino at 8 a.m. — that is the only hour you'll have the dune forest (Mata Nacional) and the bird-rich sandbars to yourself, well before the Spanish day-trippers cross the ferry from Vila Real de Santo António. For lunch, skip the seafront chain restaurants and book a table at Muxama in the back streets east of the casino — the cured tuna loin (muxama) and the cataplana de tamboril are the eastern Algarve benchmark; Restaurante Jopel is the long-established family option. To cross into Spain without driving, the river-catamaran from Vila Real sails every 30 min in summer and you'll be in Ayamonte's tapas bar street in under 15 minutes.
