When to visit Loulé. The Saturday market is the heartbeat — go early May through October, before 11 a.m., when farmers come down from the Serra do Caldeirão with fresh cheese and smoked chouriço. The Medronho Festival in late October is the only time you can taste the local strawberry-tree firewater at its source. Avoid the slow, hot dates in August if you dislike a snoring plaza; March through June brings orange-blossom fragrance and empty church interiors.
